Working With Young Language Learners

What we had done for this 3rd week of PMEY3102??
Hurm..for this week, we were asked to do a group work and each group have to present their particular topic using microsoft power point. The main topic that we were discussing for was " Working with Young Language Learners". Referring to 'Young Language Learners'..of course..it refers to the young children and this topic was very related for me as the future primary school teacher. It is because, as a language teacher it is important for me to know the skills and characteristics of young learners which will help them to learn and acquire another language.
The characteristics of young learners that make them be able to learn another language were:

• Children's ability to grasp meaning
• Children's creative use of limited language resources
• Children's capacity for indirect learning
• Children's instinct for play and fun
• The role of imagination
• The instinct for interaction and talk

My group were asked to discuss in details on the fifth characteristics which is 'The role of imagination'.

Imagination can be defined as the ability to create pictures in your mind. As we look around, children love to fantasize. They pretend or acting like someone else in different situations in a very creative way. When you were a child, have you ever imagine that you are a doctor? You and your friends pretending to be in a hospital..one of you became a doctor and the rest became a nurse or a patient. . In other situation,sometimes we are alone..but we imagine that there's another person or we can call as 'imaginative friend' playing with us.
Imagination among children is important as it helps in developing children's creative thought and it also allows children to form new ideas. Thus,this particular role is very important and useful to help children in acquiring other language in their life. Some classroom activities that can be used in order to generate children's imagination are hot seat activity, pantomime and role play.
Because of time constraint, my group didn't manage to present our topic and it will be continued on the next class.

Reflection: 2nd Week

Second entries of this week..Erm..what we have learned in the 2nd week of this subject?This week..we learned about typing skill. I'm sure that everybody knows how to type..but how fast can you type??How fast can you type a single paragraph without any mistake??30 second??1 minute??2 minute??or even less?? Do you have the right skill of typing??All these questions basically related with what i have learned in this 2nd week.Pn Fooziah,my respective lecturer taught us about typing skills.




She mentioned us about the importance of touch typing. What is touch typing??Touch typing is a popular techniques for using the computer keyboard much quicker than before. When we have master touch typing, we can type without looking at the computer keyboard anymore. It sounds great right?? So, from now onwards.. i should try to master touch typing in order to improve my typing skill.

Besides, we also did a questionnaire regarding to this subject. From the questionnaire, i realized that there are many aspects of technology that i need to explore and master. I really hope that through this subject, I can improve myself.
Pn Fooziah also introduced 2 types of software that were very useful for us.The two software were:

Using and Developing Resources for The ESL Classroom???! Erm..what is it actually?? Why I have to take this subject??For the first step I came into the computer lab..these were the questions that came into my mind. Pn Fooziah, my tutor for this subject has explained briefly on what we were going to do in this subject. From her explanation, i can say that basically this subject focus more on how a teacher has to come up with authentic, interesting and useful teaching materials to be used in the learning process. The teaching materials are not the 'traditional' one like flashcards, picture cards and etc. Instead, it uses a lot of resources from newly technology and many kinds of software that is much more interesting to be used especially in the primary classroom. That is why this subject is very important for me as a future teacher. why is it important??..because it exposes and teaches me to be more CREATIVE in teaching..Yes!as a teacher i agree that we have to be more creative in teaching process in order to grasp pupil's interest and to make the lesson become more effective.
During the lesson, Pn Fooziah also remind us to get these three things:
- 8gb pendrive
- one passport photo
- send ur blog url to her

I really hope that i can learn a lot of interesting things in this class!
